In 1602, an Englishman named Barotholomew Gosnold was navigating the waters off of the coast of New England. One day a tremendous school of cod fish swam around his ship: on the spur of the moment he called the place they were passing" Cape Cod", charting it so on his map. When his king heard of this he was not pleased, and he in turn called the peninsula Cape James. But no pne would call it that, thus the name "Cape Cod" sticks and so it will be called" till the shoals of cod fish be seen swamming on its highest hills".
